‘Where have you been?’ Matthew demands when I return. I find him at the Growing Tree.

‘I didn’t want to go to the meeting,’ I say feebly.

‘So you just decided to go off with Bayat?’

‘Nothing happened.’

I don’t know why I have to justify myself to him.

‘Are you sure?’

I wonder what my face is telling him. I know I am all churned up, that the revelation that Bayat was not the one who massacred the ferals has made me reconsider being with Matthew. I can’t let it change anything. I have made the commitment to Matthew, haven’t I? No matter if Bayat hadn’t killed the ferals, it doesn’t change the fact I feel safer with Matthew.

‘What happened at the meeting?’ I ask, wanting to steer my thoughts, and Matthew’s, away from Bayat.

‘My mother and her group will stay until the rains finish.’

‘And then?’

He shrugs.

‘Tash told us that groups of ferals have started coming down from the city, attacking their town.’

‘What?’

So, this was what they meant when they said things had shifted recently.

‘He said they didn’t understand what set them off but, suddenly, they seemed more desperate. And they had weapons for the first time.’

A chill runs through me.

‘What kind of weapons?’

Matthew’s brow creases, as if he’s unwilling to speak.

‘Bows and arrows, knives,’ he finally answers.

I shake my head, hardly wanting to concede it. Matthew’s knife left behind in the vault. The creature with the black streak in its white hair, slinking out of the water, an arrow in his hand.

‘They would have seen such things before,’ Matthew insists.

‘But, maybe, we gave them to them,’ I whisper, wondering just what it was our visit to Melney began.
